Boston Elderly Property Tax Exemption

Boston City Councillor Yancey requests auto-renewal for annual elderly property tax exemption.
The Boston City Council's Committee on Government Operations will hold a public hearing on
Friday 25 May 2012, at 10:00 am in the Christopher A. Iannella Chamber, Fifth Floor, at Boston City Hall, to deliberate Yancey's amendment to the tax exemption.
For eligibility, taxpayers (age 65 as of 7/1 of the relevant tax year) currently must file every year before March 31 to receive a reduction in tax liability of $750.   Taxpayers may receive additional relief of up to $750, provided that the additional amount does not reduce the final tax bill below the amount of tax owed in the previous year, and that it does not reduce the taxable value of a taxpayer's property below 10 percent of the assessed value.

Governor Patrick's 'Embrace Your Future' Initiative
Dear Colleagues:
As you may know, Governor Patrick recently launched an initiative called "Embrace Your Future" to help state residents plan for future long-term support including financial, legal, home modification and health needs as well as planning options.
The Governor mailed a letter to approximately 400,000 Massachusetts residents ages 45 to 60 to encourage them to order a free 44-page "Massachusetts specific" planning guide.   The Governor's letter and the entire "Embrace Your Future" initiative launch kit is attached.
The "Embrace Your Future" initiative, overseen by the Executive Office of Elder Affairs, is part of a joint federal-state initiative of the US Dept. of Health and Human Services (DHHS) entitled "Own Your Future."   Twenty-four states and the District of Columbia have participated nationwide.
