From the Center — Frontier Community Access Television
The South County Senior Center produces a show titled From the Center that airs on Frontier Community Access Television every Monday at 5 p.m. and 10:30 p.m.   The show can be seen in Deerfield, Whately, Sunderland and Conway on channel 12.   Past episodes can be seen by anyone with internet access at www.fcat12.org.   If you click on "videos on demand" and then click on "From the Center" it will list all the past episodes which include shows about Adult Family Care, RSVP, SHINE, Benefits Counseling, Elder Law, and more.   While some shows might be of more interest to people in the local area, some could be helpful to people in other areas of the state as well.   We receive help from the station and from the local high school in producing this show and it has become an important outreach tool.   The station is also going to provide the local libraries with copies of the show on DVD so people who don't have cable TV can see it as well.   Anyone wanting more information about the show can contact me at scsc@town.deerfield.ma.us or 413-665-2141.   Mary Wheelan, Director, Deerfield Regional COA

16th annual Fire and Life Safety Education Conference
22-23 September 2010
State Fire Marshal Stephen D. Coan will be hosting the 16th annual Fire and Life Safety Education Conference on September 22-23, 2010.   Classroom teachers, nurses, firefighters, school resource officers and injury prevention experts are invited to gather at the Westford Regency Inn and Conference Center for two days of training and skill development in 30 workshops and four general sessions presented by 40 speakers.   There will be core workshops for new fire and life safety educators;   workshops on new ideas, programs and teaching techniques to keep educators current;   and workshops that continue to challenge and develop new skills for experienced educators.   For the entire conference brochure listing all speakers look on-line at www.mass.gov/dfs and click on Public Education Conference under, What's New.
This year's theme, Fire Safety Education: The Never-Ending Story has two focuses.   First, it reminds us that each year there are new students who need fire and life safety education to become safe, successful adults.   Secondly, the workshops and keynote speaker look at ways of using story telling as a teaching tool, whether it is the instructors telling stories, or finding ways to encourage our students to use story telling to learn.
Bill Harley, Grammy Award Winning Storyteller, will be the keynote speaker on September 23, 2010.   His address, The Power of Story, will give insight into the power of story in our daily lives and help us as fire and life safety educators find ways to incorporate it into our work.
Dr. Elizabeth Englander, director of the MA Aggression Reduction Center will present a general session on cyberbullying and off-line safety.   Dr. England is a powerful speaker and nationally known expert how schools and parents can address this issue.
