MArtap Training CourseOn Saturday 11 February from 8-4, we will be hosting a Free MArtap Driver Training Course: 08:00-11:30 Coaching The Van Driver / Defensive Driving 11:30-12:00 Lunch Break 12:00- 4:00 Wheelchair Lift Securement Jack Mastrangelo, MArtap trainer will be teaching the course. Other agencies and COA's, with drivers, are invited to attend this course here (141 Main St., Haydenville MA 01039 - Town Office Bldg. center). Please use the form at www.martap.org to register. For your attendees convenience we will offer lunch for an optional $5.00 fee, to be served during the lunch break. MArtap is the acronym for Massachusetts (MA) Rural Transit Assistance Program (rtap). This program is a federally-funded, state-administered program that offers training, education and other benefits to public transportation providers in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. There is no fee to attend this course, however, space is limited. Please sign up ASAP in order to reserve a place for your van driver to attend this invaluable course. Workshop for Low Vision Support GroupsThursday 1 March 2012 Carroll Center for the Blind, 770 Center Street, Newton This workshop is intended for leaders of low vision support groups. The agenda will provide an opportunity to broaden your knowledge base and to hear from people who may be available as speakers. There will be speakers about eye diseases, sighted guide technique, home safety, book groups, and discussion about how to run a support group. Online Performance Management Course for Governments and Non-profitsThis course explores what performance management means and how government agencies and non-profits can adopt this management approach. Students will learn how to develop skills to refine the way goals and strategies are articulated so that they can be effectively measured, and to select practical performance measures. Using theoretical readings, case studies, and exercises, the course provides a conceptual grasp of the underlying dynamics employed when you manage for results. It also provides a practical understanding of how to apply performance management tools successfully at all levels of government across policy areas and in non-profits. This 6-week course is offered four times per year, January, April, July and October. Tuition is $600 for government employees. From the Center Frontier Community Access TelevisionThe South County Senior Center produces a show titled From the Center that airs on Frontier Community Access Television every Monday at 5 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. The show can be seen in Deerfield, Whately, Sunderland and Conway on channel 12. Past episodes can be seen by anyone with internet access at www.fcat12.org. If you click on "videos on demand" and then click on "From the Center" it will list all the past episodes which include shows about Adult Family Care, RSVP, SHINE, Benefits Counseling, Elder Law, and more. While some shows might be of more interest to people in the local area, some could be helpful to people in other areas of the state as well. We receive help from the station and from the local high school in producing this show and it has become an important outreach tool. The station is also going to provide the local libraries with copies of the show on DVD so people who don't have cable TV can see it as well. MAOA Annual Meeting Massachusetts Association of Older AmericansAs you may know, the Massachusetts Association of Older Americans Annual Meeting is scheduled at the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston, 600 Atlantic Avenue, Boston MA on Friday, October 21st between 9am and 12pm (doors open at 8am). Our speaker is Michael Astrue, U.S. Commissioner of Social Security. We are also honoring David Stevens, Executive Director of the MA Association of Councils on Aging, with our 2011 Elsie Frank Elder Advocacy Award, and Former Secretary of Elder Affairs and lifelong advocate, Lillian Glickman, with the 1st Frank J. Manning Leadership Award. I am emailing to invite you to join us at this event. Hearing directly from the Commissioner of Social Security is a wonderful opportunity to enhance our understanding of the program that is often absent from the public debate - particularly its solvency and its future and we look forward to celebrating the work of David and Lillian, both of whom have done so much to make life better for Massachusetts elders. This 2009 international documentary explores the positive impact of art on people with Alzheimer's and how this approach can change the way we look at the disease.
